Alan Belcher is an established visual and conceptual artist currently living and working in Toronto. He is recognized as a driving force behind the hybrid of photography and sculpture ("photo-objects"), and is known for approaching difficult subject matter with directness and a sharp simplicity. Belcher’s sense of humour, reverence for Pop, and hands-on approach invade much of his conceptual practice.

In addition to Toronto, Belcher has also lived in Vancouver (1976-77), New York City (1977-86), and Köln (1991-96). During his time in New York City, Belcher was co-founder and co-director of Gallery Nature Morte (with artist Peter Nagy) in the East Village from 1982-88.

Belcher’s solo exhibitions have been presented at numerous New York galleries including Marlborough Gallery, Jack Shainman Gallery, Josh Baer Gallery, Cable Gallery, and White Columns; in Toronto at The Power Plant and The Japan Foundation, and at The Apartment (Vancouver), Winnipeg Art Gallery, Galerie Daniel Buchholz (Cologne), Margo Leavin Gallery (Los Angeles), among others in Chicago, Hamburg, Montreal, Torino, Stockholm, Tokyo, and Milano.

Belcher has also had work featured in group exhibitions in New York including at the Whitney Museum of American Art , the New Museum, The International Center of Photography (I.C.P.), Marianne Boesky Gallery, Brooke Alexander Gallery, Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, Paula Cooper Gallery, The Sonnabend Gallery, Andrea Rosen Gallery, Tony Shafrazi Gallery and 303 Gallery. He has also exhibited at the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), the Sao Paulo Bienal, the Institute of Contemporary Art (I.C.A. /Boston), as well as many others across Canada and The United States, London, Zurich, Brussels, Chile, Paris, Copenhagen, Athens, Dijon, Stuttgart, Geneva, Vienna,, Amsterdam, and Lyon.

Group exhibitions which Belcher’s work has been shown in include shows curated by Robert Nickas, Cornelia Lauf, Jack Bankowsky, Walter Hopps, Laurie Simmons, Benjamin Buchloh, Jerry Saltz, Group Material, and Michelle Grabner, among others.

Belcher’s work can be found in many collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Morris & Helen Belkin Art Gallery at U.B.C., Oakville Galleries, Walker Art Centre (Minneapolis), Fotomuseum Winterthur (Zurich) and Chase Manhattan Bank; artists, Isa Genzken, Laurie Simmons, Ross Bleckner, Joseph Kosuth, Sherrie Levine, and Gerhardt Richter; the private collections of Mark Parker (Oregon), Bailey (Toronto), Bachir/Yerex (Toronto), as well as collections in New York, Los Angeles, Germany, Paris, London, and Italy.
